Ember_VIVID Sydney 2011_June 2011

Joe Snell's latests urban installation was down at Campbells Cove at the northern end of the Overseas Passenger Terminal.  The 30 metre long glowing hot coal was part of Sydney's fantastic VIVID festival. Ember's write up is as below:

Ember exudes the Australian bush story with an installation that tantalizes with its warm ambience on a winters night, yet belies the dangers of an ember attack. Precisely placed here near the waters edge, this 30 metre glowing installation pulsates to draw you closer to touch the glowing coals. The artist sees beauty in the dying embers and danger in the potential ‘ember attack’ that is synonymous with Australian bush fires.

Sydney creative Joe Snell is a University of Sydney graduate and his work at Snell Architects is in retail, commercial, hospitality and residential fields. His public artworks have included Songlines, the 10 metre high Aeolian harp commissioned for the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the popular blue lit Downer Macquarie Arch across Macquarie Street for Vivid Sydney 2010. Lighting designer Tim Barry assisted to create Ember.
